The Indianapolis Star reports fourth-round RB Nyheim Hines continues to be used out of the slot in training camp. Per reporter Stephen Holder, Hines is also frequently sent in motion. Hines saw a lot of time in the slot at NC State. The No. 104 overall pick is putting himself in excellent position to seize third-down reps in the Colts' up for grabs backfield. This kid sounds like Sproles 2.0. Not every down bell cow, but can be moved all over the field. Also: Peter King: WR Cain 'big star' of Colts camp NBC's Peter King reports sixth-round WR Deon Cain "has been the big star of (Colts) training camp." "Look for him early on to make a big impact," was one of King's main takeaways from Colts camp. This is just adding to the drumbeat that's been steadily growing. The next step will be actually translating it to preseason games. If Cain can pair a strong exhibition season with his excellent practices, he's going to steal snaps and targets in an offense where they are there for the taking. Both up and down. Cain was the better of the two. Just their first game, but somewhat inconclusive. Hines had the dropsies pretty bad.

hey Blue, I just traded for Marlon Mack in our CTM keeper league. Tell me what you think? I know he has a minor hammy but should be okay and play a lot right?

If our LT can keep healthy, the left side of the Colts line may well be crushing people. I’d say this is a good bet, although Frank seems to want to do RB and DL by committee.

I don’t think his hammy is that bad, but I expect him to sit until the regular season. Turbine has a 4 game suspension up front and these other guys they brought in didn’t show much. Luck looked pretty bad. He doesn’t seem to have timing with anyone but Doyle. With Hilton out, it was poor. Having your top three OTs on the bench with injuries didn’t help, but he still didn’t look good.

Another game of paradoxes. SF ran the ball up and down the field between the 20's, then the Colts tightened up the defense and would not let them into the end zone until late in the game. Saw flashes of talent and ineptitude. Guess that is what you expect in a preseason game.
The offense was horrible, but I still attribute some of that because both starting tackles remained on the bench. Luck looked slightly better, but there is still a lot of rust.
The offensive line was a disappointment, even allowing for the absent tackles. The GREAT ROOKIE, Quinten Nelson, looked pretty average. But there will be growing pains.
Craig, if you are looking in here, Mack is pretty iffy for game one. Thought you'd like to know.

Upon further review. We missed a lot of the beginning of the game because Fox went out for a while. No surprise there. Luck must have played better than I thought, based on the commentary. This, while running for his life. Apparently they pulled Austin Howard at right tackle after three plays. He was a ghost they were blowing right through. Denzelle Good, the projected RT, sustained a knee injury. We will not know how serious until later today. Constanza did not play of course, but our LT is expected to start the season.
The defense looked completely lost against the run. Pass defense, not so bad.
Bottom line, Doyle whom I respect, said our best players are our QB and our punter. After that, not so much. He thinks we may be this year's Cleveland Browns, if this game is any indication. He bemoans the $70 million dollar cap space we did not spend to get help where it is needed.

Well, at least there is real football this week.
The interesting thing from Colts camp is that they cut John Simon, our most productive DE in the preseason. The spin is that they felt they would have to move him back to linebacker later in the season and did not feel he would be productive. Of course, that was the position he played for several seasons.
The Colts claim they tried a few trades for him, but no real takers.
I have offered to put blades on my wheels like in Ben Hur and play DE. No response from the team thus far.

I personally feel he'd be a great fit there, so long as Luck's shoulder still allows him to throw the long ball. He didn't seem to have the same zip on his passes during what I saw in the preseason, and he basically took zero shots down the field long. Maybe it will improve and strengthen down the stretch, but for now I see Jack Doyle being peppered with targets on the short and intermediate passes.

Despite the horrible conclusion, there were some positives yesterday. Rookie LB Leonard has 9 tackles and a fumble recovery. There were some impressive sacks of Dalton. Luck looked good for the most part. He was 7-7 on what should have been the winning drive until the Doyle fumble.
Given the depleted CB position and two bench players starting on the Oline, it probably went better than one would expect. Lots of new players, some of them rookies. Suppose they will grow with experience.
If they aren’t going to sign free agents, I am kind of torn about the results I want to see this year. Hate to waste another year of Lucks career, but we sure could use another run in the top of the draft.

We just activated a DT named Jihad Ward. Hopefully, he will spread terror on the field on Sunday.
😝
Oh, and Costanza missed practice again yesterday. Go figure.

I was happy and shocked at the same time about the way our defense played yesterday. An aberration or a sign of things to come? Could not say at this point.
Unfortunately, I did see what I feared most. They went through our OTs like they were water. The three guys in the middle of the line did a great job of opening running lanes and creating a tiny pocket for Luck to step up into, but we will not be a good team until the OT situation gets fixed. And that is not likely to happen this season, even if Costanza comes back and plays like he is getting paid.

Darius Leonard had quite a day Sunday. Didn’t realize he had 18 tackles (15 solo) a sack, fumble recovery and a deflected pass. Pretty good for a rookie. Way to early to tell, but he may be something special.

I am dumbfounded. The Colts lead the league in creating negative plays by the opposing office. Near the top in points allowed, sacks and creating turnovers.
So why are they 1-2? Well, I would bitch about the offense, but when you don’t have a starting caliber OT to put on the field, it is hard to be critical.

So the Colts play at the Jets this week. Only 2.5 dogs. I’ll have to see the injury reports to really weigh in, but if Hilton, Doyle, most of our OTs, our top 3 corners and starting safeties are all out, I’d say that was pretty low confidence in the Jets.
I know, those aren’t all our injuries. Might have a DT or two and maybe some linebackers missing. Heard someone say the Jets are pretty banged up too. I will have to check. Hard to imagine they are in the shape we are.
Do strength and conditioning coaches ever get fired? Burnt at the stake?
