We lost our best Offensive Lineman, perhaps for the season. The three rookies that did start on the O line were spanked like school children. Yeah man, Luck took a beating. He's lucky to make it out of the game without being injured. Fletcher Cox NAILED him on one play and landed on him too. In all fairness though, I think the Eagles may have one of the better pass rushing units in the entire league this season.

Desperate Colts sign former Jets corner back Antonio Cromartie Desperation doesn't even begin to describe it. 7 of our best players on defense were not available last night. Our 3rd best CB joined the others on the bench after the first play of the game. We lost our best Offensive Lineman, perhaps for the season. The three rookies that did start on the O line were spanked like school children. I realize at lot of things can happen personnel wise, but it is hard not to feel a bit hopeless at this point. 7?!?! Why is that?? So you're saying Center Ryan Kelly and LaRaven Clark OT got spanked? Cuz Gore didn't look good, but somehow Trey looked good. And no, I couldn't tell if Luck was just rusty or who was to blame.

Best news of the day was that Mewhort's injury is not a torn ACL as previously feared. Out 2-4 weeks.
Random Colts thoughts:
If Curt Maggitt makes the team as he should, he has a very bright future IMO. He is an explosive athlete at the SAM when healthy and can provide some much needed energy off the edge. Mathis and Cole can really help his development.
TJ Green looks like a future perennial all-pro type player. The man can absolutely fly and is not afraid to get his hands dirty.
Luck looks like he has mostly returned to form, but lord he needs help. A green OL and a franchise QB do not mix. That right side needs to be solidified and quickly (not to say the left side has performed up to par), but Good needs to cut the mental mistakes and hopefully Reitz can remain solid at the RT spot. Clark is not ready, and that became very evident last night.
Clearly the secondary is very weak right now with Davis out. Cromartie should be very solid when he gets on the field though. Butler is maddeningly inconsistent, especially when placed out of position on the outside, but Robinson once healthy should allow Butler to play primarily in the slot. Glover-Wright did not look good at all yesterday, so my hope is that a guy like Southward can step up. I also like Frankie Williams in the slot if he makes the team.

I hear ya on the fanchise QB and a bad OL. Especially if your QB is as unmobil as mine. Rivers.
I've heard good things about your TE this year. What's his name? Dwayne Allen? What do ya think? Will Luck look for him a lot due to getting rid of the ball fast?

I'm about to post the results of that draft in a minute. He's not a PPR type guy who's gonna catch a bunch of passes for many yards, but I think he's a big red-zone target with an opportunity to catch possibly double-digit TD's. How was that coltsrockjcr? Was I close?

Huge fan of Dwayne Allen. Without Fleener, albeit immensely talented, I feel the offense will run much smoother with Allen as the primary TE. He is a much better blocker, and will provide Luck with a security blanket he did not have with Fleener and his inconsistent hands and route running. Allen is an underrated athlete who should be able to make plays in the flat, over the middle, and even stretch the field at times.
How are you feeling about Melvin Gordon this year, Craig? He had quite a disappointing rookie campaign. He is really talented, so I don't see the problem as I didn't watch the Chargers much last year. With another year in the system and acclimation to the NFL game, is he set to live up to the pre-draft hype?
EDIT: As Doc said, Allen should also be a valuable red zone threat, don't know that didn't come to mind. He's physical as hell and has sneaky athleticism.

Gordon has everything it takes to be great. The only thing he didn't have last year was an offensive line and confidence. He was a college super star and came here and as soon as Philip handed him the ball, a big fast defensive guy smashed him. He totally lost his confidence, which I don't blame him. He also had minor booboos that troubled him all year. This year he is healthy, his knee was fixed in a minor thingy. Our OL doesn't look much better so far. But Gordon has made big plays easily. His confidence might be there and if so, I expect good things. Our third back Brandon Oliver was lost for the season today. That leaves Gordon (who will catch passes by the way) and Woodhead, and whoever they bring in to replace Oliver. Gordon may be a different guy than last year. I hope so. Edit. And Oh ya he was used to a lead blocker. So in what I think is a genius move, we brought in his full back from college. J.J. Watts brother. Give Gordon a chance and he will come thru and have a great career. He needs a little blocking and he's gone.

They intend to "redshirt" him as his being on the field puts Luck in jeopardy.

Allen won whatever the trophy is for best TE in college. He is physically powerful and a decent lead blocker. He has strong hands and can catch in traffic, which is particularly useful around the goal line. Down side? Been injury prone since he arrived. We let "Skillet Hands" go to NO and kept him. Hope this was not a mistake.

Geathers is still hurt so they are projecting our second round pick Green to be the starter at the beginning of the season. Green has 4.3 speed in the 40 and is a fairly good sized safety at 6'2" but was used mostly to support against the run in college. His coverage skills are still being developed. Geathers is supposed to be one of those hybrid beasts that is part safety and part linebacker. When he returns, coupled with the old All Pro Adams, our safety rotation should become a real strength on the defense.
I went into the preseason thinking our defensive line would be the strength of the unit, but with injuries to Langford and Parry and Jones being out due to suspension, it will take a while. Kerr and Ridgeway are also developing. Before long, running through the Colts defense like crap through a goose may be a thing of the past.
Still believe the raw talent is there to develop a formidable offensive line. With Philbin coaching all the young guys, I anticipate this becoming a strength eventually. I still question Constanza at Left Tackle though. The beating he took against Philly another case in point. When he misses an assignment, he gets down on himself and fucks up some more. His strength is not in question, but his footwork and attitude make me wonder how long he will hold the position if he doesn't get his shit together.

Well, there were a few good moments between all the carnage. Some receivers and running backs made impressive plays when they had the chance. That big kid that flattened the 3rd string quarterback has done that a few times in the preseason. Okine should a touch of pass rushing skills. Despite the interception, I am convinced that Josh Freeman should be our backup QB. That kid has potential. Tolzein or whatever his name is, looks like a noodle arm to me.

UDFAs Curt Maggitt, Chester Rogers, Josh Ferguson, Frankie Williams, and Darius White make the team
Really solid group although I did not anticipate White. My guess is he gets jettisoned as soon as Vontae Davis gets back or we find a better option.
Surprising news is that Nate Irving, who most had thought had locked down the starting ILB job beside D'qwell Jackson, was released. Sio Moore and rookie Antonio Morrison will battle it out to start, and I anticipate this will be a season-long battle. Love Morrison's game but Moore is a really impressive athlete.

I don't know if it was nerves, or that he knew he hung by a thread, but I saw Irving whiff at least 3 tackles against Cincy. Okine was a bit of a surprise though, since he had been getting good penetration and getting pressure. Shame we don't have as much flexibility on the roster because of all the injuries. Still, we may make some moves and pick up some cast off talent. I am very concerned about rushing the QB off the edge even though we sat our two old men that do that best all preseason. With our first three CBs out, we will really be exposed if we don't bring the heat.
