What professional athlete did you personally think would turn out to be a very good player, but instead ended up being a complete bust... or average at best? For me, I'd have to say... QB-Bobby Hoying: Hoying was drafted in the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Hoying played well in two games in 1997 after taking over the starting role at midseason and throwing 11 touchdown passes. He won a memorable 44-42 shootout win over Boomer Esiason and the Cincinnati Bengals after throwing four touchdown passes. The following year, however, would be a complete disaster for Hoying as he was benched midseason after not winning a single game as a starter. He did not throw a touchdown pass and threw nine interceptions. The 3-13 season led to the firing of Eagles head coach Ray Rhodes, and ultimately the hiring of Andy Reid. Reid drafted Donovan McNabb out of Syracuse University, and traded Hoying. Hoying was traded to the Oakland Raiders in 2000, rejoining coach Jon Gruden who had been the offensive coordinator for the Eagles under Rhodes. After the season, he got to play in the AFC title game against the Baltimore Ravens in place of injured starter Rich Gannon, but his team lost the game 16-3. Hoying's 11 touchdown passes in 1997 would remain the only touchdown passes of his career. Hoying retired after the 2001 season following a severe elbow injury. He holds the NFL record for most pass completions in a season without a touchdown.

While I've never liked him much, the team did still win two Super Bowls with him as the QB, and he did turn out to be much tougher than I ever thought he would be... List of most consecutive startsAlso: Eli is one of four quarterbacks in NFL history with at least 45,000 career yards, 300 touchdowns, four Pro Bowl appearances and two Super Bowl championships (John Elway, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning). He is the eighth all-time leader in passing yards, and seventh in passing touchdowns. Though lacking the consistent statistical prowess of his brother, Manning is known for his exceptional performances both in the clutch and in the postseason. link
With all of that being said, I still think that his defense carried him to both Super Bowl wins, and that he was famous for pulling horseshoes out of his bunghole during crucial points of big games in the postseason.... Super Bowl XLII: 4th Quarter, 1 minute/20 seconds left to go, down 14-10...and ONLY a TD would win the game.... Asante Samuel drops the gift INT from Eli to end the game. After that, the famous Helmet Catch play from David Tyree. Not even sure how Eli made it out of that play without being sacked. The play gained 32 yards for the Giants and gave them a first down with 58 seconds left, and ultimately led to a Plaxico Burress touchdown that won the game for the Giants. I thought the entire scenario was extremely lucky for Eli, but it did happen, and they did win that game. While I don't think he's a great QB, he somehow managed to get the job done....however much luck was involved. He deserves some credit for sticking in there and hanging tough...like the 'New Kids on the Block', lol. Bottom line: You all still won two Super Bowls with him as the QB, however lucky it may have been. It still happened, and he's been sort of an unlikely ironman for you all that historically never missed many games. While I agree that he's not turned out to be a great QB, he's been far from "average"....all things being considered.

Figured his name would come into play, and rightfully so. I wonder how much his addiction problem played a part in it all?

Since I became a Lions fan in 2007, I wasn't familiar with all the mistakes we made so I won't say Joey Harrington or Mike Williams or any guys like that. My biggest miss was Jahvid Best. I thought the dude was gonna be the best runningback for the Lions since Barry with his speed and ability to make guys miss. Concussions fucked him over hard.

Had him in his rookie year one season in this league and wasted a keeper on him when he turned out to be a dud the very next season.
