Fantasy football lets you try your skills as a fantasy owner. After you join a league, you scout for and draft players, compete against other fantasy owners, and use all your skills to win the championship. Learning how to play fantasy football is easy; conquering your competitors and becoming a champion is a different story.
Fantasy Football 101: Here's what happens in a fantasy football season.
1. You join a league. You can join a public league, where anyone can sign up for a spot, or a private league, where you need an invitation to play. Some people, typically beginners, play just for fun and some play for money (in some cases, serious coin). Be sure to understand the type of league you join, along with its rules. League selection is an important factor, so don't take it lightly.
2. You prepare for your league draft by scouting players. Before choosing your fantasy team, you need to research all the available players so you can pre-rank them according to your personal preference. Understanding your league’s scoring system and roster setup is critical to creating a bulletproof draft strategy.
3. You build your fantasy football team via the draft. The draft is the most fun and exciting day of the fantasy season. During the draft, each fantasy owner selects one NFL player at a time until the rosters are complete. Fantasy football drafts can take place online, but some leagues — typically friends or co-workers — will conduct the draft in person. Remember to draft all of the correct positions, so that you can have a full team roster.
4. Your team competes against another team every week. During the NFL season, the real teams face each other and so do the fantasy teams in your league. The players' real-time stats are converted into fantasy points by your league provider, and the fantasy team that scores the most points wins the game for the week. The goal is to win as many games as possible to make the playoffs.
5. You make moves to improve your team. As a fantasy owner, you're in total control. You can drop players you think aren't good enough and replace them with free agents. If one of your starters gets injured, you can bench him and start a healthy player instead. You may even make a trade offer to another owner.
6. Your team (hopefully) makes the playoffs and wins your league. Only the strong survive, and can "Cut the Mustard" at the end of the fantasy season. The top teams square off in a single-elimination tournament to decide the league champion. The last team standing may win a trophy, a cash prize, or just honor; but make no mistake, there will be only one winner.

Unfortunately, she has had plenty of practice fine-tuning those mad WW/FA skills, because she's not so good at #3.

She does all of the preparation for it, but always seems lost during the process of draft day? My thoughts....she probably gets too pumped up for the whole process and excitement of it all, and is slightly hammered by draft time boozing. I've been there, done that....so I can understand. However, if you want to actually win a league with such fierce competition, you can't go into it drunk already. I'm not saying that's the case here, but it does seem that way. She gets so lost during the draft sometimes, that it's hard to comprehend. I love her with all my heart though. She's very knowledgeable in ff football, but for whatever reason seems to lose her damn mind during the draft. She's gonna want to kill me now, but I'm just keeping it real, Beverly. What happens to you on every draft day? It's like you're there, but you're not really there? Like you're doing something else at the same time that is more important? If keeping it real makes you hate me, than I would be very upset. I'm just giving my opinion, doesn't mean that I'm right. You've always had my back, and I'm not turning on you here, but I do agree that you seem to be kinda lost on draft day sometimes. This is just friendly fantasy football ribbing

We've only been in leagues together for 2 years, so where are you getting this "every draft day"? lol Yahoo fucked me and many others up 2 years in a row. Site freezes every few minutes. Actually had to shut down my entire computer. And sometimes I am not responsive to all of the chat during a draft cuz I am trying to assess my next pick, based on stuff you might not be paying attention to. lol "She gets so lost during the draft sometimes, that it's hard to comprehend" - You're not even there, so in the name of "keeping it real".... sober up sweetheart. And you are correct in that it doesn't mean you're right. People make decent picks that end badly, that goes for the both of you and everyone else.

I always draft according to the odd number of letters in a players name, take their jersey number, divide by 32,subtract that from how many players we draft and then multiply that by 7.

We have one girl in our money league. Last year she missed the draft. She started posting about how awesome her drafting was. She had somehow joined an nfl.com draft and thought she was drafting with us. How can you go thru a whole draft like that and not notice the names of the other drafters aren't the same as the people you have been playing with for ten years? Yes she is blond.

It seems that EVERY YEAR, I take a RB in the first round and he's done before the third game. Last year, it was Jamal Charles to an ACL injury. (He was also my 1st round pick, when he suffered his first ACL in 2011, after just one game). In my girl's league last year, I drafted Eddie Lacy 1.5-- we know how THAT turned out. *rolleyes* Two years ago, I drafted AP 1.1 --- was sooo excited-- then he ends up one and DONE, banned for the rest of the year. The list goes on and on--- I'm tempted to just forgo a RB in round 1 this year. I think I'm jinxed. I didn't say you were BAD at drafting, darling--- just bad luck drafting. But, you make up for it with your wizarding-skills on the WW.

She actually ended up with an okay team. She won the consolation bracket and go fifty of her one hundred dollars back.

I always draft according to the odd number of letters in a players name, take their jersey number, divide by 32,subtract that from how many players we draft and then multiply that by 7. My method is similar, but I go odd numbers for even rounds and even numbers for odd rounds. The jersey number gets divided by 30, then 15, then 29, 16, 28, 17 - see a pattern there? Really keeps 'em guessing. People make decent picks that end badly, that goes for the both of you and everyone else. Very true, my dear. I had the most snake-bitten teams last year, but won 2 of 6, and would've won (beating you) in Steeler's league if I'd started anyone but the Seahawks RB (Rawls?). You can see I'm still bitter. In Eddie's league, drafted Calvin Johnson #1 and Andre Ellington #2, who was projected to be a top 5. The 'experts' were wrong about almost everything last year. Oh, we have a painstakingly selected a *rolleyes* ... I see some other smileys have already vanished, will visit later.

Doc has offered the kindergarten version of 'how to play FF', '101' is basics of college or at least HS level, right? There are a lot of important things to know about this game we hold so dear. In no particular order.... The most important thing to know are your league settings. It is # 1, 2 & 3. It determines who will likely score the most points and how, thus helping you win your weekly opponents matchups. While there are aids, such as past results based on said settings that you can easily access in your league, the difficult part is assessing what has changed in the off-season that may affect that player's performance. You should realize that joining any league should be more than a whim. It is a commitment to be active. And that means not only making sure you don't start players on a bye (that is a given, and failure to do so will rightfully piss off a whole league), but responding to PMs or emails ASAP involving trade offers, and trying to do what you can to improve your team throughtout the season via WW (waiver) or FA (free agency). A minor transgression or two due to unforeseen circumstances (or in one case I had, was explained, and I tended to his team for him for a few weeks) is excusable, but just reckless abandon/MIA is not. League chat and smack talk are always welcome, and most people partake more than willingly, but if you're too busy, it's usually no biggie at all, as long as you tend to your team.

I think I will go somewhere and do a pretend draft to get the hang of it.
